Beyond Words: Indonesian Body Language and Gestures Every Learner Should Know

In Indonesia, body language carries as much meaning as vocabulary.

The Right Hand Rule

Use your right hand for everything social. The left hand is considered unclean.

The Thumb Point

Don't point with your index finger -- use your thumb with other fingers folded.

The Head Bow

When walking past someone seated, perform a slight bow. It says "permisi" without words.

Hands on Hips = Anger

In Indonesia, this signals arrogance or anger. Avoid it in conversations.

The Handshake

Indonesian handshakes are gentle. After shaking, many touch their chest with their right hand -- meaning sincerity.

Foot Etiquette

  • Never point feet at someone
  • Remove shoes before entering homes and temples
  • Never step over someone sitting

The Smile

Indonesians smile constantly -- but it means different things: warmth, embarrassment, apology, or confusion. Learning to read smiles is a cultural skill.
