The Expat's Guide to Bule Prices vs Local Prices

"Bule" (BOO-lay) means foreigner. And bule often pay more. The markup can be 20% to 300%. But learning Indonesian dramatically narrows this gap.

Why Language Changes Everything

When you open with "Selamat pagi, Bu! Berapa harganya?" instead of pointing and speaking English, something shifts.

Essential Shopping Phrases

  • Berapa harganya? -- How much?
  • Terlalu mahal! -- Too expensive!
  • Bagaimana kalau [number]? -- How about [number]?
  • Terima kasih, saya pikir-pikir dulu -- Thanks, I'll think about it

Bargaining Rules

  1. Always smile. Bargaining is social, not adversarial.
  2. Start around 50-60% of asking price.
  3. Walk away politely if you can't agree.
  4. Never bargain in malls or restaurants with printed menus.
