'Pasar' = traditional market. 'Supermarket' = supermarket (same word!). 'Pasar malam' = night market — a must-visit experience!

Learn the shopping words "Toko" (Shop) and "Pasar" (Market) in Indonesian. These Bahasa Indonesia vocabulary words are essential for navigating Indonesia's vibrant retail landscape from tiny family shops to sprawling traditional markets.

💬Example Sentences

  • Di mana ada toko oleh-oleh?

Where is there a souvenir shop?

  • Pasar ini buka sampai jam berapa?

Until what time is this market open?

  • Saya mau ke pasar malam.

I want to go to the night market.

🏭Cultural Context

Indonesian shopping culture is wonderfully layered. At one end, gleaming modern malls (mal) in Jakarta and Bali are as sophisticated as anything in Asia. At the other, the traditional pasar is a daily institution — chaotic, sensory, and full of life. A pasar pagi (morning market) runs from before dawn until around 10am and sells the freshest produce, fish, and meat. A pasar malam (night market) comes alive after dark with street food, clothing, and entertainment. Fixed prices (harga pas) exist in shops and supermarkets, but in a pasar, bargaining (tawar-menawar) is expected and part of the fun. The expression "boleh kurang?" (can it be less?) is your first move in any negotiation.
