Telling Time in Indonesian: Why 'Setengah Tiga' Means 2:30 (Not 3:30)

"Setengah" (half) refers to half before the next hour.

The Half-Hour Trap

  • Setengah dua = 1:30 (halfway to two)
  • Setengah tiga = 2:30 (halfway to three)
  • Setengah tujuh = 6:30 (halfway to seven)

Basic System

  • Jam satu -- 1:00
  • Jam dua -- 2:00
  • Jam lima seperempat -- 5:15

No AM/PM -- Use Greetings

Instead of AM/PM, use the greeting system:

  • Jam tujuh pagi -- 7:00 AM
  • Jam dua siang -- 2:00 PM
  • Jam empat sore -- 4:00 PM
  • Jam sembilan malam -- 9:00 PM

Quick Drill

  • 9:00 AM -- Jam sembilan pagi
  • 2:30 PM -- Setengah tiga siang
  • 8:00 PM -- Jam delapan malam
